On the afternoon of April 18, 2024, Dr. Seth Meyer, Chief Economist of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), along with J. Wade Sheppard, Senior Policy Advisor for Trade Policy and Geographic Affairs (TPGA) at USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), Robert Hanson, Minister-Counselor for Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in China, Agricultural Attaché Eric Mullis, and Agricultural Specialist Liu Jing, visited our college for an exchange. Dean Qiu Huanguang and Associate Dean Zheng Shi met with Dr. Seth Meyer and his delegation. The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as collaborative research and faculty and student exchanges. The meeting was chaired by Associate Dean Zheng Shi.
Qiu Huanguang warmly welcomed Dr. Seth Meyer and his delegation, providing an overview of the college and expressing gratitude for USDA’s active support in promoting various exchanges and collaborations with the college. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the research strengths of both parties to establish a platform for scholarly exchange and collaboration in the agricultural field between China and the United States.
Dr. Seth Meyer highly praised the research capabilities of the college and introduced the basic functions of the USDA. He provided a detailed explanation of the regularly published “World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates” report, expressing hope for future collaborative efforts to yield more fruitful outcomes based on the solid research foundation of both parties.
The meeting also involved extensive discussions on issues such as China’s food security, grain prices, market uncertainties and challenges, U.S. grain prices, and grain exports.
Professors Tian Xiaohui, Tang Jianjun, Associate Professor Yang Sansi, and Assistant Professors Kong Xiangwen, Liu Qi, and Zhang Kexin from the college attended the meeting and discussions.
