Biography:

Tong Zhihui is a professor and doctoral supervisor. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Central Party School, completed postdoctoral research in Management Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University, and has been a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His main research interests include rural governance, rural politics, China in the 1950s, and rural cooperative systems. His early research focused on the contemporary practice of rural governance, and he now also emphasizes historical research and current policy studies.

Tong Zhihui is the Deputy Director of the Department of Rural Development Teaching and Research, Director of the Rural Governance Research Center at Renmin University of China, and Deputy Director of the Social Transformation and Rule of Law Research Center at the National Academy of Development and Strategy at Renmin University of China. He is the founding Executive Editor and former Deputy Editor of the "China Nonprofit Review" (CSSCI series) and the Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal "Local."

He has published four solo monographs, several co-authored works, and edited three volumes. He has authored over 100 academic papers in journals such as "Social Sciences in China," "Sociological Studies," "Political Studies," "Open Times," "Chinese Rural Economy," "China Rural Survey," and "China Rural Studies." He has received numerous accolades, including a nomination for the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award (2004), the First China Rural Development Research Award (2005), the First China Women's Studies Award (2005), and the Excellent Work Award for Cooperative Economy in 70 Years of New China (2019). He serves as an anonymous reviewer for multiple academic journals.

Tong Zhihui has led and completed several national social science projects, national postdoctoral fund projects, and international cooperation projects. He has also directed various projects commissioned by ministries and participated in major national social science projects and key projects of the Ministry of Education. Currently, he leads the major planning project at Renmin University of China titled "Foundations of Local Socialist States: Comparative Study of Agricultural Cooperation in Shanxi and Zhejiang," the major tackling project of the Ministry of Education titled "Historical Experience of Rural Governance System Construction in China over the Past 70 Years since the Founding of New China," a general project of the National Social Science Fund titled "Institutional Advantages of Collective Village Community System," and an emergency management project of the National Natural Science Foundation titled "Research on Multi-Subject Participation, Scene Attention, and Smart Rural Governance."He also serves as a member of the Expert Committee on National Grassroots Governance and Community Building of the Ministry of Civil Affairs and as a director of the China Water Conservancy History Research Association.
